Continued Learning Model

Education Minister, Adriana LaGrange, on March 20th, outlined the Alberta Education guiding principles for k-12 continuous education practices. The following four principles are guiding the decision-making process with regard to educational practices in Alberta.

The safety of students and staff comes first.
Student learning will continue.
Provincial funding is still flowing to schools.
Your school division has the flexibility to do what is best for your community.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak and provincial directives, East Central Catholic and all school divisions across the province have been asked to close schools to students and shift our teaching and learning practices from the classroom to the home. We understand these changes are going to create some unusual challenges for our students, staff, and families. Moving forward, under the direction of Alberta Education, ECCS Board, and school administration the division is in the process of developing a "Hybrid Model" of teaching and learning. This approach will provide school administration and teachers to develop individualized learning approaches that best meet the needs of the students and the families at this point in time. Our guiding principles in the months to come are designed around the following:

  1. Focusing on our Catholic faith and service model to lead by serving and meeting the needs of our most marginalized students and families where they are at this point in time.
  2. Adhering to Alberta Education teaching and learning guidelines for Continued Learning At Home.
  3. Designing teaching and learning practices around the individual needs of the student and families at this point in time.
  4. Relying on the professional discretion of principals and teachers to do what is in the best interest of student learning while taking into account the unique circumstances of each family.
  5. Actively communicating with students and parents to support teaching and learning practices at home.

East Central Catholic School Division is in the process of developing an online resource for parents to support the teaching and learning process from home.
