Catholic Education Week Message

April 23, 2020

I am sending a reminder that this is Catholic Education Day.  While the unusual circumstances of the schools closed for students makes it difficult to have your usual celebrations, we should all take a moment today to thank God for the gift of Catholic Education. The gift is not a certainty. Many provinces have lost the right to have publicly funded Catholic education systems and we are constantly under threat in Alberta.

The Therore Case in Saskatchewan (that is headed to the Supreme Court) is a very real reminder that many people would like us to lose our right to Catholic education. Let's celebrate in our own way today and express our appreciation for the right to keep our Catholic education systems.

Pope Francis wrote about catholic Education on February 20, 2020 and I have included a portion of his commentary here..

Pope Francis, on February 20, 2020 spoke of the importance of Catholic Education across the world... “It is an appeal,” he said, “to all those who have political, administrative, religious and educational responsibilities to rebuild the “village of education”. The aim of being together is not to develop programs, but to find the common step “to revive the commitment for and with the younger generations, renewing the passion for a more open and inclusive education, capable of patient listening, constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.

“The educational pact must not be a simple order, it must not be a “reconstitution” of the positivisms we have received from an Enlightenment education. It must be revolutionary,”

Take care.
