National Indigenous Day - June 21

FNMICanadians commemorate National Indigenous History Day by taking the time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples across Canada. Leading up to the National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, system educators are encouraged to build stronger relationships and greater understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples by helping to promoting several learning repositories within their educational settings:

Aboriginal Peoples of Alberta: yesterday, today, and tomorrow provides a glimpse into the culture, history, issues, and future opportunities of Indigenous Peoples.

The Blackfoot Digital Library has information about Blackfoot people and culture. The site contains images, audio, videos, and documents collected over the past century.

CASS’ Guide to Relationships and Learning with the Indigenous Peoples of Alberta brings understanding to multiple areas of learning capturing the voice of Indigenous Peoples and system education leaders.

Empowering the Spirit includes educational resources to deepen understanding of First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives on literacy and numeracy. The resources are the result of a partnership between Alberta Education and the Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortium.

LearnAlberta (français) offers educational resources related to First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives and experiences, including residential schools and Treaties. Resources correlate to Alberta programs of study.

National Indigenous History Month offers visitors access to a learning portal with various Canadian resources to learn about Indigenous history, languages, cultures, and experiences. Much of the learning material was created or co-created by Indigenous peoples.

Alberta’s Ministry of Indigenous Relations Facebook page will feature celebrations slated across the province during the month of June!
